Some May still do not know that there was no mosque at Ground Zero.Kontroverze park around 51 Islamic community center is elevated from a local zoning issue the nation, and in some ways international, debate. Maybe the "argument" is a better word.
If we take away the emotions and begin to look for facts, first we notice a glaring fact is that the term "Ground Zero Mosque", which in many news was wrong. Many news outlets, to be precise, at least added the word "near" as in calling it a mosque "near Ground Zero." Rather, it is two blocks away.
For some, the two blocks is not far enough. It is also more than a mosque, as has been reported that the basketball and culinary schools. The center is also said to be open to people of all faiths.
More facts to consider include the death of many Muslims on 9 / 11 Yes, there were Muslims working in the World Trade Center, along with people of many other faiths. There were Muslim and first responders on the scene to help.
However, even more facts include news of the Quran reading, the celebration of Ramadan and Muslim prayers being offered in the services held at the Pentagon. These are the last of the 9 / 11 without the widespread protests and controversy, even though the Pentagon goal on 9 / 11, many people lost their lives.
Other comments and news reports mention the presence of other, smaller mosque within a few blocks from Ground Zero (5:12 blocs, according to an Associated Press report), one of which was there before the construction of the Twin Towers. Of course, the "consecrated ground" which, for some, going through the block of Ground Zero also reportedly includes strip clubs and gambling hall.
Even with this information, there will always be those who were uncomfortable with the idea of an Islamic center that is being built there. Some call it "inappropriate," some called up. But as anything related to 9 / 11 is sure to be a multitude of feelings and emotions, we, as Americans, we must not forget our core values.
If we want to discriminate against a group of people based on their religion, or deny them the same rights provided to others, we are in the process, forgetting our principles? I really hope not, because if we ever abandon our core values, which is the day terrorism will have won.
